I have to say, upon graduating from Sheridan College (known for its positive artistic environment) and deciding to go back into the teaching world was hard. I didn’t know why it was proving to be such a stiff adjustment… until one day I realized, I was experiencing what musicians are encouraged to develop; HIGHER EXPECTATIONS of the music industry.

Words my vocal coach (a Mirvish and Broadway performer) “Never expect less of your teachers what you expect of yourself”… and “You should only surround yourself with gigging, performing professionals, because their input will always be deemed freshest from the working field”. At Capstone, the music teachers are real performing musicians.

Where I was raised and first hired in the music industry just didn’t cut it for me anymore. RCM credits are goals to set for ones future to attain… but…. in lessons…

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO ESTABLISHING LOVE FOR MUSIC?

WHY IS THIS NOT A PROMINENT PART OF CURRICULUM ANYMORE?

Most importantly;
IS THERE ANYWHERE THAT ENCOURAGES KIDS TO FEEL MUSICAL INSPIRATION?

My answer lay within my very own neighbourhood.

CAPSTONE MUSIC surfaced in conversation I was having with a fellow teacher elsewhere one day. She was affiliated with the studio and spoke words of wonder in rave. I decided to investigate… because her tone of excitement was one I recognized. It was the same expression of pride that I would speak of my Sheridan roots. I was honoured to be a part of such a prestigious program as their performing arts program, where I could be myself and experiment.

Immediately upon meeting Geoff (the owner), I knew in my heart something (in fact, a LOT of things) felt right. This is where I wanted to be. I was relaxed, inspired, comfortable, encouraged and most of all perplexed by how I had never found this place.
How had I not stumbled upon it (being so close to my home).
Because of this, it is my sole mission to spread the good word:

CAPSTONE MUSIC ROCKS MY WORLD!

Upon making the big move over to the new music studio; I not only have inherited a great support system (the first school I’ve been teaching at to make me feel represented), a family (an array of colourful and incredibly talented staff surrounding me each night) and a handful of students who have bright futures in music!

I am at a loss for words other than to plainly put it; I am grateful for being so blessed. This is my ode to Capstone Music for its warm welcome, its belief in me as a teacher and its resources it provides me to do the best job I can do for inspiring pupils.

Just to list a FEW things Capstone has to offer that other studios won’t have:

– enthusiasm everywhere! (not a frowning face in sight)
– a huge selection of musical resources (music books, theory books, new instruments to experiment with each week, recording resources, internet and research resources etc.)
– exposure (for both students and staff as working professionals)
– a relaxed environment/decor (to put students at ease)
