Frequently Asked Questions
We’ve put together answers to the questions we hear most often from our students and families. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, reach out—we’re always happy to help!
1. What age is best to start music lessons?
Every student is one of a kind. Most kids are ready to begin exploring music between ages 5 and 7, though some show interest and focus earlier. The key is interest, not age. We focus on play first, helping each student find the joy of making music before worrying about perfection.
2. How old is too old to start?
It’s never too late to learn music. Many of our adult students start for the first time and quickly discover how rewarding it can be. Whether your goal is relaxation, creativity, or lifelong learning, we’ll help you find your groove.
3. How often should I take lessons?
Most students take a weekly 30-minute private lesson, which creates a steady rhythm of growth and consistency. All lessons are offered in half-hour increments. Some advanced players or students studying multiple instruments choose 60-minute sessions or attend twice per week, but for most, a weekly half-hour lesson is the ideal balance.
4. How much time should I spend playing at home?
We encourage students to think of it as playing. Even 10–15 minutes a day goes a long way when it’s consistent and fun. Play songs you love, explore new sounds, and make music part of your daily life.
5. Do I need an instrument at home?
Yes — having your own instrument is essential to grow as a player. We’re happy to recommend reliable, beginner-friendly options for guitar, piano, drums, and more. Our goal is to help you find something that feels and sounds great without over-spending.
6. What if I need to miss a lesson?
We understand life gets busy! While we can’t guarantee make-up lessons, we offer two “Floater Days” (vacation days) from September–June, and two more during July–August. These can be used with 48 hours’ notice. The only guaranteed make-ups are for teacher absences or studio cancellations.
7. How does payment work?
Lessons are ongoing and pre-paid monthly, based on the calendar month. Payments are due on the 1st of each month and can be made by Visa, MasterCard, or Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). Keeping your payments current ensures your time slot stays reserved just for you.
8. What holidays do you observe?
Capstone Music observes all Statutory Holidays and builds them into our yearly calendar. For flexibility, students receive the two Floater Days mentioned above — perfect for vacations or schedule conflicts with enough notice.
9. What if I need to discontinue lessons?
If you wish to pause or stop lessons, we simply ask for 30 days’ written notice before your final lesson. This helps us maintain a fair and consistent schedule for teachers and students alike.
10. What if I’m sick?
If you’re feeling unwell, please stay home out of respect for your teacher’s health and the well-being of others in the studio. If you’re still up for playing, we’re happy to set up a Zoom lesson so you don’t have to miss out.
11. Are your teachers qualified?
Yes — and more importantly, they’re inspiring. Every Capstone teacher is an experienced musician, performer, and educator who knows how to keep lessons encouraging, creative, and fun. Our team makes sure every student feels comfortable and confident.
12. How do I stay informed about updates?
We communicate lesson updates, billing reminders, and studio announcements by email. Please add info@capstonemusic.ca to your safe senders list so you don’t miss anything important.
